What is the Process for Commercial Wood Staining?

The staining process is similar to painting, but it requires far more precision and attention to detail.

1. First, you must sand the surface. We usually work our way up to about 200-grit sandpaper for the best results.
2. Next, our staining contractors will inspect the surface to ensure no grooves appear after we apply the stain.
3. They will then test the stain on a small, hidden part of the wood to make sure it is the color you want.
4. If the color looks good, our team will continue staining the entire surface.
5. Once the stain is on, it will need to dry.
6. Repeat steps four and five as necessary. 
7. After we apply the final coat, sanding is essential to remove any imperfections.
8. Sometimes we will add a clear coat of epoxy or polyurethane to help protect the stain.
9. Again, we will likely have to sand, but now, using high-grit sandpaper.
10. Finally, our commercial wood staining crew will inspect the wood closely to ensure everything is perfect.

What Are the Different Types of Stains?

Not all wood stains are made the same, but each has its place. Here are some of the most common types of wood stains.

– Oil-Modified Polyurethane

• Oil-modified polyurethane stains are perfect for an older, more traditional look because they have been around much longer than water-based stains. As a result, oil-based stains were most likely used on older furniture and floors, giving them their original look.
  
• Oil-modified stains do an excellent job of repelling water and are fairly durable. However, if you use them indoors, we recommend using a respirator and having ample ventilation because they emit harmful solvent fumes

– Water-Based Polyurethane

• Water-based polyurethane stains dry clearer than their oil-based counterparts and dry about 75% faster! They are much safer to breathe and can be environmentally friendly. And with relatively recent technological advances, they now often dry harder than oil-based stains.

– Natural Oil Stains

• Natural oil stains are plant-based, typically made from linseed or tung oil. While the oils themselves are low in toxicity, sometimes harmful drying agents are added to linseed oil to speed up the long curing process. This could include things like lead, arsenic, beryllium, chromium, cadmium, or nickel.
• Tung oil has a quicker drying time, so such additives aren’t necessary, but it is a nut oil, so it could be toxic for people with nut allergies.

– Varnish

• Varnish is a popular choice because it is highly resistant to heat, water, and chemicals. It is the perfect type of stain for decks, outdoor furniture, and pergolas. However, it usually contains high levels of volatile organic compounds, which are toxic when inhaled. For this reason, we highly recommend using it outside.
